Y-Speak: The shape of me

WE DESERVE the right to lead our lives without shame and prejudice.

Being curvy is a good thing, I mean I was.

I know it is not healthy to be fat but I tell you, it is also not easy to lose weight. However, I commend those who do an effort to lose weight and those who encourage them rather than bring them down.

I have always been bigger as compared to other kids but it was not until high school when I saw it as a problem.

I began to over eat and did not exercise enough. I was beginning to focus more on school rather than keeping myself healthy. As the years pass, I got heavier and heavier.

As a result, I began to lose self-confidence and have a lower self-esteem. This led to a hermit-like life where I was becoming less social.

I was moody and I would turn to food to cope with it.

When I entered college, I was bigger than most of my friends, which was the worst feeling that I have experienced.

It was not easy dealing with my weight brought about the pressures of society. People have perception of how we should look like. Coupled with this is the continuous bombardment of the beauty on how one should be considered beautiful and sexy.

With that, I am standing up for the people who are curvy. We deserve the opportunity to live in a society where we feel no shame; where our physiques will not be discriminated.

I do not have to be ashamed of who I am. But there are still times when I look in the mirror, I would hope to see changes like my face will look slimmer or lose a few inches around my waist.

Right now, I am contented of what I have because I am proud of who I am. Losing weight will still be a struggle but I realized that I have learned to love myself. I am now much comfortable with my body.

Whatever the size or the shape of your body, it is important to embrace it. I am proud of how I look. This is me and this is my shape. (Cenalen Sasana NuevaespaƱa, Notre Dame of Midsayap College intern)
