Rama calls Margot an addict; Mike ‘must be terribly stressed’

TWO weeks after the village and youth elections and nearly a year before the next polls, two leaders of the main opposing parties in Cebu City continue to exchange allegations.

In an interview, former mayor Michael Rama has accused Councilor Margarita “Margot” Osmeña of being a drug addict.

“Yes, that (allegation) was (raised) even before. She was named as a drug addict,” Rama told reporters over the phone.

Councilor Osmeña declined to comment, except to say in a text message: “Mike must be terribly stressed. God bless him na lang.”

About 75 percent of winners in the May 14 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections are allied with Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan (BOPK), which has also seen defections from the party that former mayor Rama leads. This week, a BOPK-allied youth leader won the SK Federation presidency, which means the administration party gained one more seat in the Council.

Rama said the administration led by Mayor Tomas Osmeña has been wanting to ruin their group, particularly the barangay captains, by accusing them of being thieves.

Right before the elections, Osmeña filed a string of administrative and criminal cases against 59 of 80 barangay captains for their failure to liquidate financial assistance the City distributed in 2015.

Rama said that the captains in question didn’t steal the cash advances they had yet to liquidate, but that the cases ruined their reputations.

“Iyang (Osmeña) ginganlan among team ug Team Suyop, pero mag istorya man gani ug suyop ug adik, kana si Margot, kahibaw kaayo ko ana (Osmeña calls us Team Suyop but since we’re talking about drug use and addiction, that Margot, I know about her),” he added.

In his news conference yesterday, Osmeña said: “Everyone knows Margot, my wife, is already 69 years old. And she’s a drug addict? That doesn’t need any explanation. She served already for 25 years; she doesn’t make people ligid-ligid there. She doesn’t walk into a telephone pole, siya pa ang nahimong drug addict? Na praning na si Rama, uy (Rama’s getting paranoid). My message to Rama is suyop pa more,” he said. (RVC)
