THE Fete de la Fleur fashion show sparked more than beauty and elegance as it was a show for a cause that aimed to inspire the public by highlighting what we can proudly call our very own.

The show was a collaboration of JCI Zugbuana, an all-ladies organization, together with Ayala Center Cebu, fashion designer Dexter Alazas and landscaper Jaime Chua. It took place Saturday, May 19 and showcased the beauty of the floral and fiber industry in one setting.

The Gallery in Ayala Center Cebu was transformed into a garden blooming with a medley of flora and fauna by Chua, as members (both past and present) of JCI Zugbuana—including their children—walked the runway wearing the creations of Alazas. Complementing the looks were the jewelry collection of gemologist and jewelry designer Jarra Angbetic.

“This show is a homage to flowers and women with a cause. It’s a salute to empowered women and giving them a tribute to their many contributions in uplifting women’s rights through fashion,” said Alazas. “Fete de la Fleur is an advocacy campaign promoting local fashion with Hablon de Cebu.”

Giving a vibrant interpretation to the colors of nature, Alazas’ designs evoked a modern vibe that combined handwoven hablon together with silks and satins that also complemented each wearer’s personality and preference. Floral lace appliqués and ostrich feathers for accents added to the pieces.

“No beading was done on the garments as I wanted it to remain clean as it is. Only the mettalic threads of gold silver and other colors woven into the cotton fibers gave the garments a sheen that’s just right,” he described. “The collection isn’t a trend nor a forecast.”

“We want to inspire women out there that through fashion, we can express our passion to help our fellow Cebuano locals especially those industries that need a boost like the local weavers of Cebu. Local women weavers are very skillful. We want to promote them because it’s something we can call our very own as one Cebuano community. Not just that, we can also provide the future fabric industry of Cebu the opportunity to excel in what they do,” shared May Joan Abellana, JCI Zugbuana 2018 president.

“I personally find joy in creating positive change in the community. JCI Zugbuana develops compassionate leaders. As we aspire, we continue to inspire others as well. There is so much we can do with collaboration. We put power back to our community by collectively achieving things together.”

That night was the first launching of the Fete de la Fleur and the start of a series of shows to be held annually on the month of May at Ayala Center Cebu armed with inspiration and passion.
