LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- Over 500 youth pitched in to join the annual Linggo ng Kabataan celebration here.

Councilor Johnrey Miguel said the annual event was originally scheduled for the last quarter of the year, but because of the recovery efforts from recent typhoons, the event was moved for January 21 to 24.

Miguel said representatives from all high schools in the valley have been called to participate in the four-day celebration.

Sanguinang Kabataan (SK) takes the lead in facilitating events with over 50 students pitting against each other in art and academic tilts.

Slogans, posters and essays were created by representatives from all local tertiary schools on the theme "Kabataan, May Magagawa Ka, Maasahan ng Bayan."

Miguel said most pieces revolved around environmental effects, while posters also depicted scenes of degradation.

A spelling and quiz bees culled the best in academics from each school.

A drum and lyre competition is set Friday as well as dance and inter-choir completion both to be held at the municipal grounds while on Saturday a battle of the bands is set at the municipal park featuring local musical icons.

On Sunday, the SK Federation will award the winners' certificates and cash prizes.

Miguel said youth volunteers are now involved in a "Zero Dust Program," in a bid to help clean the streets of the town. "There are also tree planting activities scheduled."

Miguel said after the Linggo ng Kabataan celebrations, preparation for the summer sports festival is underway. "This will be an inter barangay activity."
