Suspects in Jeron Teng stabbing incident charged

AUTHORITIES filed on Monday, June 4, charges against the suspects in the stabbing of Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) player Jeron Teng and two others in Taguig City, Metro Manila.

Southern Police District (SPD) director Chief Superintendent Tomas Apolinario Jr. said Edmar Lacanlale and Willard Balisi were charged with frustrated homicide with serious physical injuries.

"Sa police ito ang findings nila but it will depend on the appreciation of the fiscal if ibababa or itataas ang kaso laban sa kanila," he said.

(It depends on the appreciation of the fiscal on whether the charges would be upgraded or downgraded.)

Teng, along with his two companions Norbert Torres and Thomas Torres, obtained several stab wounds after being attacked by the two reportedly after a heated argument in front of Early Night Club at the Fort Strip in Bonifacio Global City before dawn on Sunday, June 3.

Jeron and Thomas remained in the hospital for further treatment.

The suspects claimed it was self-defense following a brawl with the three.

The victims' party, however, refused to accept such reasoning.

According to their legal counsel, Howard Calleja, his clients want to file a frustrated murder case against the suspects.

They will also ask the court to order the Bureau of Immigration to issue a hold departure order against the suspects.

"As far as my clients are concerned, we will go for the full justice of the law, we will seek justice, the full extent that can be served," he said.

Lacanlale and Balisi were detained at the Taguig City Police Station. (Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo/SunStar Philippines)
