2-hour power outage hits Negros Island

A POWER outage hit Negros Occidental and a portion of Negros Oriental for about two and a half hours from 2:03 p.m. until 4:34 p.m. Monday, June 4, due to the tripping of the 138-kilovolt (kv) Mabinay-Kabankalan lines 1 and 2.

Michelle Visera, regional corporate communications and public affairs officer for Western Visayas of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), said the whole coverage areas of Negros Occidental Electric Cooperative (Noceco), Central Negros Electric Cooperative (Ceneco) and Northern Negros Electric Cooperative (Noneco) that cover the whole of Negros Occidental were affected by the blackout.

In Negros Oriental, affected were service areas of Negros Oriental Electric Cooperative (Noreco) I (Tadlong substation) and Noreco II (Bayawan and Banaba substations).

"NGCP, with the electric cooperatives, made efforts to restore power as soon as possible. But since it is a system, we cannot automatically restore power because we need to do the inspection to determine the real cause of the power interruption. Until now line patrol is ongoing because they need to determine the cause and avoid further interruptions," Visera said.

She said Noreco I and II are connected to the Kabankalan line, that is why their service areas were also affected by the power outage.
