Big waves stall Cebu-bound ship at sea for 7 hours

A CEBU City-bound ferry was stranded today at sea for almost seven hours after it reportedly encountered big waves.

The mv Trans Asia 9, a roll-on roll-off passenger ship of Trans-Asia Shipping Lines, came from Cagayan de Oro and was scheduled to arrive in Cebu at 6:30 a.m. but docked at Pier 5 at 12:20 p.m.

However, the vessel got stalled at sea after it was battered by big waves, the operations division of Coast Guard Station – Cebu said.

One of the passengers, Fr. Felmar Castrodes Fiel told Sun.Star Cebu that they left Cagayan de Oro on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

He noticed there were only a few passengers; in the tourist section where he stayed, there were only six people.

On Wednesday morning, Fiel said they were informed that they will be arriving at 7 a.m. Their time of arrival was later moved to 9 a.m., until they arrived at 12:30 p.m.

'Manageable'

Fiel, who is the assistant general manager of dyRF Radio Fuerza, said he didn't notice the big waves since he was sleeping. When he woke up, they were already sailing between Bohol and Cebu.

“No one panicked, complained or suffered motion sickness. I believe the situation was manageable,” he said.

Fiel added the management of Trans-Asia made sure the passengers were treated well.

They were even given breakfast consisting of sardines, meat loaf and rice.

“When we travel, unpleasant surprises sometimes happen that's why it's important to be patient,” he said.

Authorities are now investigating the incident.
