6,000 vacancies in job fair

THERE are more than 6,000 job vacancies that will be offered to job seekers this coming June 12 for the Independence Day Jobs Fair at Almendras Gym.

Public Employment Service Office (Peso) chief for Davao City Lilibeth Pantinople said there are about 50 local companies that have registered for the said jobs fair. They will be offering about 2,537 local job vacancies primarily call center agents, construction-related skilled workers, marketing personnel, service crews, engineers, and human resource personnel.

There are already 20 companies offering 3,518 jobs abroad. According to Pantinople, most of the in-demand jobs abroad include those for nurses, sales assistant, caregivers, skilled workers, engineers, beauticians, waiters and waitresses, dental personnel, and machine operators.

She added most of these workers are in-demand in the Middle East, Singapore, and Australia.

With nurses as the most in-demand abroad, City Health Office (CHO) Technical Officer Dr. Julinda Acosta said they are really affected by this. As Davao City has a growing population, it is actually in need of additional medical staff. However, with limited salary of nurses employed by CHO, others are going to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) which can pay better, applying for different jobs beyond their field, and others opt to go abroad.

“Of course, we can’t also prevent them for working abroad because there’s a greener pasture there. We can’t also recruit immediately the fresh graduates because we do not offer a really big salary. But really, we are in need of both doctors and nurses with our growing population now,” said Acosta.

The Independence Day Jobs Fair will only be a one-day activity however job seekers are encouraged to pre-register at Felcris Centrale before proceeding to the jobs fair on the 12th. The pre-registration activity started yesterday, June 7 and will last until Monday, June 11.

The Philippine Statistics Authority also came up with a report that as of April of this year, the employment rate of Davao Region had gone down to 94.6 percent from 95.1 percent of April 2017.
