Sea-rious Business

AT first glance, the place looks nothing like a seafood shack—what with elements of wood, leather and exposed concrete walls in its interior that’s lit up by pendant lamps. Then its semi-open kitchen and seafood-centric menu give it away. Here to perk up lunch and dinner dates, and warm the cockles of crustacean lovers’ hearts is Symera, a 55-seater restaurant situated in Bonifacio District, F. Cabahug St, Cebu City.

Symera is a portmanteau of “sea” and the names of 21-year-old owner Rachel Mae Young, her mother and sister. “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always wanted to have my own restaurant. I’m currently taking up entrepreneurship and one of the requirements for graduation is to establish our own business. Coincidentally, we are big seafood lovers and my mom has a direct supplier for fresh prawns, lobster, and crabs, so everything just fell into place,” said Rachel.

Since it opened in April, the must-order and most ordered dishes are the garlic butter crab, buttered shrimp with salted egg, and herbed pork chop with garlic butter (yes, they do have non -seafood items on the menu). Not far behind are the sizzling kansi (classic bull in a creamy mushroom sauce), and bouillabaisse (mixed seafood soup). One may order the crab, blue crab, or lobster in various sizes and have it cooked to his preferred preparation—sauteed with red chili and tomato sauce, sauteed with tomatoes and salted egg, sauteed with butter and garlic, steamed with salt and soda water, loaded with peppercorn and oyster sauce, or sauteed in shrimp paste, ginger, garlic and coconut milk.

If one is partial to prawns, he may also choose to have them rubbed with Cajun spice, sauteed in garlic butter, stuffed with cheese, or mixed with binagoongang gata for that delectable dance of flavors. “Apart from the taste, our customers come back for the quality, the generous serving portions, and fast and friendly service, which is really of utmost importance to us,” Rachel revealed.

If you still have room after feasting on the mains, go for the cheesecakes which come in avocado, durian, jackfruit, mango and matcha flavors.

Open daily from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and from 6 to 10:30 p.m., this new seafood spot in town is quite a catch.
