A RESIDENT died while a barangay official was seriously wounded after suspected members of New People’s Army (NPA) strafed the latter’s house at Barangay Humay-Humay in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental early Tuesday, June 12.
Killed was Lenmar Cabasag while wounded was Mike Jakosalem, a newly-elected village chief.
Senior Superintendent Raul Tacaca, director of Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office, said Jakosalem was in his home when about 70 unidentified men, armed with high-powered firearms, fired at his house around 4:30 a.m
Jakosalem’s neighbor, Cabasag, went out of his house after the gunshots. However, he was hit. Jakosalem was also hit on his head.
The perpetrators then shouted “Mabuhay ang NPA” while escaping on foot.
Both victims were rushed to a hospital, where Cabasag was declared dead. Jakosalem was transferred to a hospital in Bacolod City.
Authorities recovered from the scene fired bullets of M16 and AK47 high-powered firearms.
Tacaca said Jakosalem has previous threats from NPA even during the campaign period.
Although authorities have yet to confirm the identities of the perpetrators, Tacaca believed that NPA perpetrated the attack.
In April this year, Guihulngan Councilor Paulo Edison Dela Rita was also gunned down by two unidentified men.
This happened a year after he survived the attempt on his life when he was also ambushed by suspected rebels in the city that resulted to the death of Superintendent Arnel Arpon, and five other policemen who responded to his call for assistance.
