Dengue cases down in Davao region

THE Department of Health in Davao Region (DOH 11) reported that dengue cases in 2018 dropped by nearly 50 percent as of April 14.

Yasuy Avila, DOH 11 health education and promotion officer, said a total of 761 dengue cases were reported to Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (Resu) in Davao from January to April 14, 2018.

The figure was 49.74 percent lower than the 1,514 cases documented in the same period in 2017.

"The highest percentage of these cases comes from Davao City, however, we cannot yet give the figures as these are still unconfirmed cases," Yasuy said.

Avila said "unconfirmed cases" refer to patients who showed symptoms of dengue, but have not been confirmed positive of the illness.

According to the DOH website, there were a total of 1,995 dengue cases with 14 deaths in 2017, lower than the 4,608 cases and 41 deaths in 2016.

These were, however, not the final figures since some reports were delayed and some cases were under review, the DOH said.

Meanwhile, DOH 11 is calling anew individuals and groups who are interested to join its dengue awareness short video making contest to submit their entries on or before June 15 to its offices in the region.

Dubbed as “Dengue prevention and control is everyone’s responsibility, together we can make a difference,” the video contest aims to raise awareness on how to prevent dengue, Avila said.

Avila said this movement is in line with Proclamation 1204-1998, which declares the month of June as “National Dengue Awareness Month,” while every June 15 is observed as the Asean Dengue Day by the Asean Health Ministers.

Requirements for the video entries are: duration of three to four minutes only; it should raise public awareness; must be in accordance to copyright laws; music used in entry must be original; no limit to the number of cast; and should be Tagalog or Bisaya.

The deadline for submission of entries is on June 15, Friday, while judging of entries will be on June 18, Monday, Avila said.

The winners will take home P15,000 for the first place, P10,000 for the second, and P5,000 for the third.

Anyone can submit their entries at DOH 11 office in Davao City, Davao del Sur Provincial Hospital Compound, Davao Oriental Provincial Medical Center, Purok Kaimito in Tagum City and Poblacion, Nabunturan town, Compostela Valley.
