Meat prices in Negros Occidental drop amid school opening

PRICES of most meat products in Negros Occidental have dropped amid the opening of classes, latest reports of the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) showed.

As of June 18, based from Market Price Monitoring Report of PVO, an average price of beef decreased by P1.30 per kilogram.

From P251.74 per kilogram, it went down to P250.38 per kilogram.

For chevon (goat meat), PVO noted a decrease of P0.54 per kilogram.

From P298.42 per kilogram as of June 11 monitoring, the price dropped to P297.86 per kilogram.

Another decrease in price was noted in broiler dressed chicken.

From an average cost of P181.83 per kilogram, it decreased to P181.69, or a drop of P0.14.

Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena said the decrease in prices is attributed to the high supply of the commodities as farmers decided to sell their animals for the cost of student expenses.

Decena said, traditionally, livestock raisers, especially of cattle, carabao and pigs, raise animals to fund the needs of their children during school opening.

"Such trend in prices of meat products in the province is expected until August," he said, adding that one factor in the demand is the weather.

“Some consumers do not buy from wet markets during rainy days,” Decena said.

Meanwhile, prices of other meat products remain steady, PVO reports further showed.

The average price of carabeef (carabao meat) is still P244.98 per kilogram.

Also, there was no movement on prices of pork and native dressed chicken. It stayed at P224 and P209.58 per kilogram, respectively.
