Kekert: Caohagan Quilts

Kekert: Caohagan Quilts

IN 1997, a Japanese woman named Junko Sakiyama (nee Yoshikawa) settled on Caohagan Island together with her husband Katsuhiko, where they ran a resort. Before the move to The Philippines from Japan, Junko had taught quilting in her native country and was very happy to share her passion to teach the local women how to make quilts.

Fast forward a little over 20 years later, supporting the locals of the peaceful island of Caohagan and highlighting the grandeur of each piece, together with the celebration of Philippine Independence Day, a grand exhibit was held at the Mountain Wing Atrium of the SM Seaside City Cebu showcasing quilt designs through art and culture inspired by the local way of life.

Caohagan Quilts is also proud to have had exhibitions at the International Quilt Exhibition in Yokohama (Japan), Peace Museum of Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto (Japan) as well as the International Quilt Exhibition in Nantes, France. The small island of Caohagan has a current population of just over five hundred locals with a size of 50,000 square meters. It is situated between Cebu and Bohol located along a string of coral reefs called the Olango Island group.
