4-year-old negative of meningococcemia

A FOUR-YEAR-OLD child in E.B. Magalona who was earlier reported to have died of suspected meningococcemia was tested negative of the bacteria.

The victim died at Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital on June 12 at about 8 p.m. He was immediately buried the following day at the E.B. Magalona public cemetery.

Provincial Health Officer Ernell Tumimbang said the laboratory results from the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine (RITM) showed the victim was negative of meningococcemia and that the neighbors of the victims including her family should not worry of probable contamination.

Dr. Edmundo Janeo, E.B. Magalona Municipal Health Officer, said that based on the death certificate issued by the hospital, the four-year-old girl died of septic shock and that the hospital already got a specimen from the child for the laboratory test to the RITM.

He said that the victim had sudden fever and rashes and was brought to the hospital on June 11.

He also said the hospital has already given Prophylaxis to the grandmother of the child who has direct contact with the victim before she died.

He also assured the residents of the barangay not to worry because contamination of meningococcemia is only through direct contact with the patient.
