THIS week, the University of Negros Occidental–Recoletos (UNO-R), in cooperation with the Bureau of Fire Protection, is setting up its Fire Brigade. The head of the UNO-R Safety and Security Department is doing everything to put in place the safety and security concerns of the 15-hectare school campus. More than 20 volunteers attended the four-day training.
I was picked to give the opening message by the Supervisor. Allow me to share what I shared with the trainers and participants in the said training.
I opened my discussion with the story of the Great Flood of the Old Testament. I told the group that only if there was already a fire brigade or a disaster Management Team at that time the casualties of the flood could have been lessened. Because of the absence of such, the people have not prepared for the rains and the great deluge. Only Noah and his family had attended the seminar with God on disaster preparedness.
Then, I followed this with the story of “Little Red Riding Hood.” She was a little girl who was eaten whole together with her grandmother by a wolf that disguised itself as Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother. See, how cunning the wolf was.
But because of the lumberjack who passed by and saw the wolf inside the house of Mrs. Hood. He immediately killed the wolf and saved Mrs. And Ms. Wood. Should there be a rescue unit at that time, the incident could have been evaded for they will know that some wolf is lurking around the vicinity and they will try to abate this disaster.
I continued with the story of Snow White, the lady which lacks iron in her blood that is why she was anemic and was named as white as snow, imagine that. She ate the poisoned apple and died. Of course, you know the story that seven little people of the forest saved her. They let her stay with them until one day, an old fruit vendor sold her a poisoned apple. She was immediately helped by the seven little men but they were too late and they were not skilled to do CPR or any first aid. But there came the prince and kissed Snow White. Actually, he was doing CPR.
The great flood during the time of Noah came rushing because the forest is already bald because of the illegal logging is done by Noah to build his ark.
Little Red Riding Hood’s story could have been twisted. Because of the encroachment of man to the natural habitat of animals, the brutes retaliate. The wolf could have just roamed in its territory but because grandma built a house there, they were deprived of their habitat. The wolf was killed by the lumberjack out of season. He must be accused of illegal poaching.
The fate of Snow White could have been evaded only if she stayed home.
So, if we prepare for something, be sure that it will be for the good of all.
