(Updated) Senior Police Officer 1 Adonis Dumpit, a former close-in aide of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, was killed in a "drug bust" that led to a shootout with authorities in Tagbilaran City, Bohol on Wednesday, June 27.

A police spot report said the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Bohol led by Renan Oliva and the Tagbilaran City police conducted a "drug bust" against Dumpit at 8:20 a.m. Wednesday in Purok 1, Dagohoy Road in San Isidro District.

A shootout ensued after Dumpit allegedly fired at the operating team. Dumpit was killed on the spot.

Senior Superintendent Remus Medina, Regional Intelligence Division chief, said 15 packs of methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu were recovered from Dumpit.

NBI-Central Visayas Director Patricio Bernales said the operation against Dumpit was legitimate.

Dumpit had been identified as a high-level target and a drug protector.

Dumpit is the second active police officer in Central Visayas who was killed in a police operation in 17 days.

Last June 10, Senior Inspector Raymond Hortezuela, a Cebuano assigned to the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office, was killed in a shootout with Counter-Intelligence Task Force members in Barangay Tipolo, Mandaue City.

Dumpit, a bemedaled police officer, had been reassigned to the Bohol Provincial Police Office after a series of assignments in Cebu following his release from jail in 2016.

He went into hiding after Regional Trial Court Branch 6 Judge Ester Veloso issued a warrant for his arrest on Jan. 8, 2010 for allegedly killing suspected robber Ronron Go in 2004. The police officer surrendered on Feb. 1, 2010. He was convicted in August 2014 of homicide.

He spent six years in jail and was released on bail in May 2016, with the assistance of the Cebu City chief executive.

In early 2017, Osmeña appointed Dumpit as caretaker of Barangay Ermita supposedly to curb the rampant illegal drugs trade in the barangay.

All village officials then, led by the late barangay chairman Felicisimo "Imok" Rupinta, were suspended for six months following their alleged failure to cooperate with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in the conduct of an anti-illegal drugs operation.
