AboitizPower subsidiaries reach 20 million safe man-hours

ABOITIZPOWER subsidiaries AP Renewables Inc. (Apri) and San Carlos Sun Power Inc. (SacaSun) recently clocked in 20 million safe man-hours without a single lost time injury (LTI) among its employees and contractors.

Of the 20 million safe man-hours achieved by the two companies, more than three million came from SacaSun, which operates AboitizPower’s 59-megawatt solar power plant in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental.

Apri’s geothermal power plant in Tiwi, Albay has recorded zero accidents resulting to lost since 2009 while its geothermal facility in MakBan, Laguna already reached seven years without injuries resulting to lost time.

“This shows the commitment of AboitizPower to prioritizing the safety and health of our workers, whether organic or contractor,” Apri and SacaSun Operations Risk Manager Ford Hipolito said, during SacaSun’s first stakeholders’ meeting in San Carlos City last Monday, June 25.

Among those who attended the activity were local government and barangay officials, representatives of the Department of Education (DepEd), as well as SacaSun’s partner contractors.

SacaSun has been able to keep its zero injury streaks since the start of its operations, despite the power plant’s extensive construction involving more than 4,000 workers before the site was commissioned in 2016, the firm, in a press statement, said.

The stakeholders and plant employees blew safety whistles together for 20 seconds, symbolizing the “hard work, determination, and teamwork which were key ingredients to achieving this latest milestone,” it said.

Apri earlier conducted a series of town hall meetings at its geothermal power plants in Tiwi and MakBan, as well as in its corporate office in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City, where employees also blew their safety whistles together.

Kevin Beavers, senior vice president for operations of Apri, said the safety and health have always been part of doing business and are shared responsibilities of all team members.

Meanwhile, Engineer Alberto Suansing, chairman of the board of the Safety Organization of the Philippines, said the attainment of 20 million accident-free man-hours is no simple feat.

“It takes hard work and focus,” he said.

Apri and SacaSun’s respective Environment, Health, and Safety Departments has rolled out several safety programs such as monthly huddles, regular emergency drills, safety orientations, and various training and certifications related to occupational health and safety.
