From where she stood

IT’S hard to talk about sunrise and sunsets yet at the same time not feel like one is at a loss for words.

Anyone who has taken the time to watch the day as it changes can attest to this feeling of being swept up with emotions like waves crashing in. One can’t help but feel something—it comes without warning.

Cebuano artist Golda King knows the charm it brings, having a clear view of the sky from her home. Around the time of her return to Cebu City from San Francisco, she was going through a period of adjustment, transition and in search of something beautiful. Turns out, it was in front of her all along.

“I’ve lived in that house for a very long time but it was just in 2014 that I noticed. When I really saw the sunrise, I thought ‘Oh my God! This has been here forever!’” she recalled. “It might sound cliché but when you see it, you go, ‘Life’s not so bad after all.’ It’s so beautiful.”

The sky is like a big canvas swirling with colors that leave us transfixed; through her artwork, she presents a view of it with Time & Light. This is a collection showing the sincerest hours of Golda, hand-painted on minaudières made of capiz shell from the brand Signature Art founded by Cebuano designer and longtime friend of Golda’s, Janice Chua.

“I remember when she first came back that that was one of the first things that I remembered about Golda. She would always post her sunrise and sunset photos and they were very nice because she always had a great view from her house,” Janice mentioned as she was telling the story of the passion project.

“The shell is really nice on its own but I thought it could be more striking or more beautiful if there was a painting on it,” she said, adding that it’s not just wearable art, it is functional art.

A one-day exhibit took place last June 14 at The Pig and Palm, MSY Tower, Cebu Business Park, Cebu City. Each bag is a colorful depiction of the different hours of the day with little snippets in between, carrying names like “Happy Hour,” “Eggs Benedict,” “Blink” and “Emancipation” to name a few.

“It doesn’t have to be what I’m doing at that certain hour. It could be whatever I’m thinking, what state I’m in at that certain hour,” said Golda.
