Help is here

THE Philippine Mental Health Law or the Republic Act (RA) 11036 has been signed by the President on June 21.

RA 11036 will establish a national mental health policy for the purpose of enhancing the delivery of integrated mental health services, promoting and protecting the rights of persons utilizing psychiatric, neurologic and psychosocial health services, appropriating funds therefor, and for other purposes

This would mean, the rights and the welfare of persons with mental health needs will be secured and protected. Mental health education will further be promoted in schools and the workplaces.

Access to mental health services will be better and more attainable. These services will be available in the barangays and in all hospitals. The law will also improve the mental health care facilities in the country.

This law can also prevent the stigma that comes with mental health. People will be more understanding and empathetic to persons who are experiencing mental health concerns.

Yes, help is here. But help has always been here. There are individuals – physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, guidance counselors, mental health professionals, and advocates – who have always been around to help out.

Many hospitals and organizations (both government and non-government) have been offering services, though limited. Now, with this law, everything can be improved and made better.

A person with mental health issues needs to accept that they need help, that they may be suffering from a mental illness and that it is okay to ask for help. Mental disorders can be treated and managed with proper therapy and medication.

Everyone, anyone, not just the law and the mental health professionals can help. Yes, YOU can assist someone in need.

Many times, friends who are confused, lost or feeling sad, tend to turn to their friends first. Please give your support by listening to them and not judging. Be more understanding, be more patient and encourage them to seek professional help. Also, be careful with what you say, they may interpret it in another way. The best way to help them is really to listen to them and being there, even if words are not exchanged. Sometimes words are not necessary.

Indeed, help is here.
