OFW who had accident in Saudi is back home

AN OVERSEAS Filipino worker (OFW), who met an accident three months ago in Riyadh in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, arrived in Davao City on Wednesday afternoon, June 27.

The OFW was identified as Cherrloyd A. Laga, 32, a mason of the Al Mawarid Recruitment Company in Riyadh, Saudi, and is from San Isidro, Buhangin District, Davao City.

According to the report, Owwa-Davao director Petrona Bergado said, Laga fell from the fourth floor of the company’s accommodation area while he was on duty on April 18, 2018.

The common-law wife of the worker, Jenna Sumilhig, relayed to the concerned government agencies that Laga does not remember falling from the building.

Laga was deployed in Saudi Arabia on April 11, 2018, Wednesday. It was his first time to work abroad and be away from his family thus he had a hard time adjusting at his workplace.

The worker remembers nothing of the incident. He was rushed to Shumese Hospital for medical attention, and due to fracture, he underwent operation on his legs and his spine.

Bergado said the employer of Laga shouldered all the medical expenses in Riyadh, while his transportation expenses to Metro Manila were covered by his insurance.

Through the assistance of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (Polo)-Owwa in Riyadh, Laga was repatriated last June 25 in Philippines and was confined at Adventist Medical Center.

Laga was attended to by physicians while in Metro Manila. The government also ensured his medical condition along with the support of Philippine Recruitment Agency (PRA).

Bergado said Laga arrived at the Francisco Bangoy International Airport here on June 27 via PR-1815 Philippine Airline (Pal) accompanied by Sumilhig and Owwa representative.

"Though the worker finds difficulty in moving his feet, he cannot move on his own, his condition is already stable. His doctor advised that he only needs physical analysis," Bergado said.

Bergado said Laga is entitled to avail its ‘Balik Pinas! Balik Hanapbuhay Program,’ a livelihood assistance of the Owwa, to distressed OFWs, worth P20,000.

The transportation assistance of the worker from Metro Manila to Davao City was headed by Owwa-Davao welfare case officer Marjan Lolit Salazar with the Davao City Central 911.
