A NEW team is in the process of becoming a member of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi).
The University of Cebu-Lapu-Lapu Mandaue (UCLM) is forming a team for the 2018 Cesafi Season and applying for membership in the Cesafi league.
This information was relayed by UC’s athletic department head Jessica Honoridez in an interview with SunStar Cebu. She said that for a start, they will only be joining the individual events.
“This has already been taken up by the Cesafi board that UCLM has the intention to join the Cesafi. So far, the application is going well. The team is already preparing,” she said.
Honoridez said that as part of the UCLM’s preparation for the coming season, it conducted tryouts for individual sports last Saturday. The school will be selecting 173 athletes for the secondary and collegiate levels.
“This is the chance for the UCLM students to represent the school since it is separated from the UC-Main Campus. It will give an opportunity to the athletes who can’t go to the main campus, especially those coming from the northern side,” she said.
UCLM is planning to join seven events: swimming, athletics, badminton, table tennis, chess, taekwondo, and karatedo.
Honoridez said that they are starting with these individual events but hope to expand the sports program.
“In our tryouts, I could feel the excitement of the students,” she said. “It is part of our program to help other campuses put up sports teams.”
Honoridez said that this major step of UCLM started when they thought that aside from doing a summer sports program, they should join the Cesafi’s individual events.
“The plans to join Cesafi kay dugaya na gi plano. But it just materialized this summer. The initial plan was only a clinic. Dr. Ann Son, the director of UCLM, brought up the idea of UCLM joining Cesafi to the board and it was approved by Atty. Augusto Go,” she said.
The 2018 Cesafi is set to open in August with basketball as the curtain-raiser.
Current member-schools in Cesafi are the University of San Jose Recoletos, University of Cebu, Cebu Institute of Technology University, University of Visayas, Don Bosco Technoloy Center, University of San Carlos, Cebu Eastern College, Southwestern University-Phinma,University of Southern Philippines Foundation and Sacred Heart School Ateneo de Cebu.
