Sanchez: Blasphemy

HE WAS NOT a theologian. But I found comfort with Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson’s statement. He said: “May my God forgive him and make him atone for his sins,” adding that he previously thought that President Rodrigo Duterte was God’s gift to the Philippines.

He was referring to Duterte who questioned God’s logic and called Him “stupid.”

Whoa, that was way too much.

I hope, I prayed that I have changed ever since my recovery from two attacks of subarachnoid hemorrhage, or a brain aneurysm. I was ready to go to my hospital bed. It was, I thought, going to be my deathbed.

But I realized it was a selfish wish because I feared prolonged suffering. Staying in bed without moving, as my neurosurgeon advised, is going to be worse than being cooped up in solitary confinement.

It is not my will but the Father Abba’s will that should be followed. I recovered, able to retain my intellect and my mobility.

After my second stroke, I saw on my Facebook news feed promoting the Prayer and Life Workshop (PLW). Quite well enough to go on my own to the Queen of Peace Church in Hua Ming. That was an entry point to the Catholic charismatic movement.

In PLW, I learned to pray for grace to be forgiving, understanding and loving of perceived enemies and lowlifes, including politicians I detest.

Every day I read and reflect on the Bible. I joined the Light of Jesus Family, also a Catholic charismatic community.

I realized they were also on a spiritual pilgrimage as I was on this earthly life. Ping Lacson was formerly on my list of people I want off my life.

This year, I’m surprised to read Lacson’s statement on Duterte.

Now it seems Duterte is on a warpath with the Roman Catholics. I am willing to look over his criticisms of leaders of the church. In fact, I want him to unmask wolves in sheep’s clothing that could lead to their criminal conviction especially on pedophilia and child abuse, and fiscal mismanagement.

He started to expose them way back in 2016. He has not. Duterte is still in threat mode today. All blather.

And now it is not simply erring clerics he wants to castigate. He is blaspheming God whom he calls “stupid.”

Still, it is still not the president and me, a private citizen. I know enough theology to know that Abba is a forgiving Father, always ready to embrace a repentant sinner.

But from all indications, Duterte remains full of venom and spite.

Well, he is on his sunset years. Duterte is relying not on Abba but on his new god Fentanyl. Let him worship his drug. (bqsanc@yahoo.mail.com)
