Exciting chess weekend

TWO successive chess tournaments will unveil this weekend.

As part of their annual fiesta highlights, Barangay Carmen will hold the exciting fiesta “tatluhan” rapid chess team tournament on Saturday, July 7, at its covered courts.

Registration is free.

Each team must be composed of three players with the required average team rating of 1950 or below based on the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) rating list.

Around 40 teams will vie for cash prizes at stake in the day-long team competition.

The champion team will bring home the P10,000 top purse, while the second and third placers will get P7,000 and P4,000 cash prizes, respectively.

Fourth to 10th placers will receive P2,000 each.

Best performer in boards one, two and three will also be given P1,000 apiece.

The fiesta tournament will also feature a special category for kiddies 12-under with the champion to receive P1,500 and the second and third placers to be given P1,000 and P700, respectively.

The rest of the top-10 finishers will settle for P500 each.

On Sunday, the 1st Robert Tan Memorial Blitz Chess Tournament will open at the Limketkai Center.

This is a blitz individual tournament with each player be given 5 minutes and two seconds increment to play.

The winner will take the lion’s share of P10,000, while the second and third placers will go home P7,000 and P5,000 richer.

Fourth to sixth placers will be awarded P3,000, P2,000 and P1,500 with the rest of the top-10 finishers out to receive P1,000 each.
