Editorial: #MoreFishNotPlastic

DUE to billions of plastic waste thrown into the oceans, lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water around the world, it is seen that there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish by 2050.

The people and the community should get their acts together – we have to reduce our plastic consumption, or better yet, not use plastic at all.

We have seen sea turtles and fish species whose primary diet includes plastic wastes, which is very harmful to them.

Bodies of water all over the world are choked by plastic. That’s the bottom line. It puts our planet, our health, and our animal life, at risk.

Kudos to those people whose strong advocacy is to save the oceans from tons of plastic waste.

With this, the Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation Inc. (PRRCFI), in partnership with SM City Bacolod, will hold a SweepWalk today, July 7, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

SweepWalk is picking up trash while walking, which will start at 21st Lacson Street to the north wing of SM mall.

Sweep is an acronym for Sea Waste Education to Eradicate Plastic.

PRRFCI executive director and SunStar lifestyle columnist Dave Albao said the SweepWalk builds and strengthens the community.

He said one challenge we have in Bacolod is our solid waste management.

He added that they want more people in the city to be aware of our solid waste management, and to act and reduce the flow of plastic to the ocean.

Let’s sweep our streets of waste. #MoreFishNotPlastic.
