Simple nutrition hacks I wish everyone did

“WHAT use is your medication if you don’t have proper nutrition?” was a question posed to me by my grandfather who happens to be one of the pioneers of public health here. Truth be told, I’m quite spoiled for health, having acquired and been taught habits that have enabled me to have better health than that of most of the population (my personal health can still be better). His question got me thinking, having come from meals with several acquaintances wherein “unhealthy” food was more of the norm rather than the outlier. With health, I’ve always known that simplicity is best, and that complexity (or the fancy schmancy) comes from the mastery of the basics, so here are some nutrition tips I wish people would apply for better health and wellness:

Drink more water

This is something most people take for granted. Drink more water, upwards of excess of four liters per day. I’m quite surprised that I see quite a number of people favoring sugared drinks. Do your kidneys and other organs a favor. Drink more water!

Eat your vegetables and fruits

We need to include more vegetables and fruits in our meals. Why? Vegetables and fruits are loaded with micronutrients and minerals that help with optimizing our body’s functions. Don’t skip out on these. In fact, most of your plate has to be composed of vegetables and fruits.

Balance, Moderation and Variety

These are tenets of nutrition. You need a proper balance of protein, carbohydrates and fats for body functions. Moderation is key, especially in controlling the waistlines. It’s okay to eat some of your favorite food, but not too much. Eat as many types of food as available and do get the required micronutrients and minerals.

Quality

Eat food that’s fresh and looks healthy. For vegetables and fruits, go organic if you can.

You see, nutrition doesn’t really have to be complicated. I think that we’d all go a long way in our health if we followed these simple tips for better wellness and health!
