Yeng sets comeback to Congress in 2019

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- With finality, former First District congressman Joseller “Yeng” Guiao has decided he would make a comeback bid to regain his seat in Congress next year.

Over the weekend, Guiao told SunStar Pampanga that he has decided to heed the clamor to serve anew his constituents in the first district of Pampanga composed of the cities of Angeles, Mabalacat and the municipality of Magalang.

“I have decided to make a comeback upon the clamor of our people and to continue what we have advocated and started during my stint as first district representative. This is also to end speculations as to my plans for 2019,” he said.

“There is still so much to what we have accomplished during that time like the development of Clark airport whose new terminal and expansion were approved and taken off. This is also true with the proposed rail system and sports stadium which we pushed and have been approved. Hopefully, we could set more developments for not only Clark but the contiguous areas of Angeles, Mabalacat and Magalang,” Guiao added.

He comes from Magalang, the smallest political unit in the district.

The full development of the Clark International Airport was the centerpiece of Guiao’s legislative agenda and partnership effort with the business community in his three-year term as a neophyte lawmaker.

Guiao continues to be upbeat on the growth of Clark and Pampanga. “We expect more to come our way in the coming years.”

He said what the province enjoys now are the result of the collective and cumulative efforts of the past and present national and local leadership.

“This development did not happen overnight but was the fruition of hardwork, vision and dedication of our leaders in government, business and civil society past and present,” Guiao said.

He added that his decision to run again for Congress was boosted by the favorable “pulse of the people in the first district.”

Guiao was not yet definite on what party he would run. But earlier, Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) Central Luzon Chairman Tito Mendiola revealed that Guiao would be their bet in 2019 for the district’s congressional campaign.

Guiao lost in the 2016 congressional polls to the now incumbent Carmelo “Jon-Jon” Lazatin.

A three-cornered fight is seen in the congressional race in the district with Guiao, Lazatin and incumbent Angeles City Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan who has also manifested his intention to go for the post. (JTD/With NCS)
