Davao City sympathizes with Japan

THE City Government of Davao sympathized with the people of Japan following torrential rainfall that caused floods and landslide in the western part of the country.

In a letter address to Ambassador of the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines Koji Haneda, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio expressed her sadness over the huge effect of the disaster to Japan that claimed the lives of several Japanese.

“On behalf of the City Government of Davao, I would like to express our deepest sympathy to the people of japan for the recent flooding and landslides which had a drastic impact to the western part of the state,” Duterte-Carpio said.

She further believed that with the unity of the people of Japan, the normalcy will soon be restored and recover from the effect of the calamity.

“We know that the resiliency and competency of the people to handle disasters will allow rehabilitation to be quickly introduced. The collective efforts if the Japanese will hopefully lead to the redevelopment and recovery of the affected areas,” she said.

The mayor added, “We are one with you in praying and hoping that the people affected from the flooding may stand tall and quickly recover from any form of loss.”

Based on the resolution passed on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 by Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre, committee chair on Tourism and International Relations likewise expressed his sympathy, condolences and moral support to the people of Japan on account of the July 8, 2018 heavy rainfall, flooding and landslides that occurred in their country.

On Sunday, Japan experienced what was called the heaviest rainfall seen in their country for decades causing flooding and landslides which caused destruction over large parts of Japan, particularly in Hiroshima and other parts of the South-west, such as in Okayama, Hyogo, Kyoto, Gifu, Shiga, Kochi, Ehime, Yamaguchi and Saga It was reported that the death toll due to the incident rose to around 122 while dozens are still missing.

As such, some 73,000 personnel have been mobilized for search and rescue efforts.

“Davao City and Japan have a long shared history of friendship, partnership and cooperation, with Mintal, Davao City becoming known as Little Tokyo,” Alejandre said.

The Japanese government, business associations and their people have extended aid to Davao City, be it in tourism arrivals, business partnerships and during calamities also when Davao City needed help.

“With this unfortunate calamity that hit Japan, the people of Davao City also commiserates with the people of Japan and sympathizes with the families of those who died. Further the people of Davao City are praying and hoping for a fast recovery of the families as well as the redevelopment of the affected areas,” he added.
