Mayor Loot may not seek reelection, amid security issues, PB Member says

DAANBANTAYAN Mayor Vicente Loot may not seek reelection next year, considering threats to his life since President Rodrigo Duterte tagged him as a drug protector in 2016, an accusation the retired police general has denied.

Provincial Board (PB) Member Sun Shimura, Loot’s stepson, said he is open to running for mayor or vice mayor. He is on his third consecutive term in the PB and barred by term limits from seeking reelection. Shimura’s mother, Maria Luisa Loot, also previously served as town mayor.

Mayor Loot said he needs to talk to his family about his plans and, for now, is “lying low” and focusing on his security. A day before the May 2018 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections, Loot and his family survived an ambush by armed men while they were leaving a boat in Barangay Maya, Daanbantayan.

In a separate interview last Tuesday, Senior Supt. Manuel Javier Abrugena said he has not yet received any request for a security detail from Mayor Loot. His two police escorts were recalled last May.

Public officials have been given a month to apply with the Police Security and Protection Group for an official security detail. (JKV, KAL)
