DO YOU want to taste a slice of summer?

Today's food-centric culture has taken us to another level. Transforming the ordinary to extraordinary, it has created grubs that are out if this world. What better way to experience this than with desserts.

Recently, I went to a world famous patisserie in Sydney, Australia - Black Pastry Shop. Situated within the KinoKuniya bookstore at the Galleries, I would say it is the best go-to after a tiring book hunt. Watermelon in a cake might sound pretty weird but it is worth a try. Here's my take on their desserts.

1. Vegan Chocolate Popcorn

Want to indulge without the guilt? This dairy free cake is perfect. It looks pretty and it tastes like it too. Although it has a fudgy brownie texture, I still enjoyed its combination with salted caramel popcorn and dried raspberries. The glazed cocoa syrup compensates its slight dryness.

2. Raspberry Lychee Cake

Fun and light and a bit sentimental, this cake is built on love and a bunch of cuteness. The base is made of a chocolate biscuit layered with vanilla ice cream and raspberry marshmallow. Topped with lychees and raspberries, it brings a subtle hint of freshness and sweetness to it that you will love.

3. Portuguese Custard Flan

My least favorite among the three, it tastes like the normal leche flan only encrusted on a dough. This flan inspired by Portuguese' pastel de nata is made of vanilla custard. I'd give this an average of 5.

4. Strawberry Watermelon Cake

It wouldn't be black star pastry without its world famous watermelon cake. Tastefully charming, it is layered with almond dacquoise, rose-scented cream and watermelon slice. Every bite gives you that perfect summer vibe. Top it off with strawberries, pistachios and dried rose petal, it can be that instagram worthy capture you are looking for.

Except from the custard flan which, costs around AUD 5(P200), the three cakes mentioned above can be bought at AUD 8(P317) per slice. Though it may sound a bit costly, trust me it is worth it.

After a sweet filled morning, we decided to visit The Grounds. My friends and I opted to have a hearty brunch and boy it was huge! We ordered a flank steak sandwich, grade 9 wagyu (tenderloin) steak and their bestselling grain fed burger. For AUD 98(P3800) our tummies were so full.

Flank Steak Sandwich

This was an extremely big serving! Look at the onion rings and that huge cut of steak with melted cheese and herbs. Every bite takes you to a gastronomic feast. The bread was perfectly crisp and soft as was the flank steak.

Grain Fed Burger

My friend decided to have her steak well done. Although, this deserves a better marbling at medium rare, it still tasted really good. The rosemary herbed butter had a good run on the tenderloin. It was aromatic and sweet. Compared to the regular steak, it had different beefiness to it that was warm and light.
