Sisters of Mary joins Cesafi as guest team in basketball

THE Sisters of Mary School-Boys Town Aloysians will play as guest team in the newly added 12-Under division of the basketball event of the 2018 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi), which opens in August.

This was confirmed by Cebu Province and Aloysians basketball coach Van Halen Parmis to SunStar Cebu. He said that school’s application to join the 12-Under division has been approved by Cesafi Commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy.

“It’s like a dream come true for us. The kids are now very excited to play at the Cebu Coliseum. Most of our players are from the mountain areas and majority of them have not played in a court like Cebu Coliseum,” he said.

Rico Navarro, Cesafi athletic directors group member and recording secretary of the Cesafi board, said in a quick talk with SunStar Cebu that games of Sisters of Mary School-Boystown will count on the win-loss record just like the rest of the participating teams.

“When I heard that there is a 12-Under I inquired about it and I talked with Commissioner Tiukinhoy. He said just write a letter. We submitted a letter and after four days we got a reply, granting our request,” said Parmis.

“My players come from the new set of students. There are more than 500 new students,” said Parmis, who added the basketball program of Boystown is supported by the Cebu Province under the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission as part of its grassroots program.

Parmis said he was encouraged to form a team for Cesafi after they finished at fourth place among 16 teams in the Milo Little Olympics Regional Finals last year with only a few months of practice.

“I can say that these boys have potential. You just have to develop them and teach them the basics of basketball. They are hard working and will listen to instructions. I think we are going to give a good fight in this Cesafi season,” he said. (RSC)
