Zamboanga registers high leptospirosis cases

ZAMBOANGA City Health Officer Dulce Amor Dagalea-Miravite has warned residents against wading on flood waters in a bid to prevent cases of leptospirsosis.

Miravite issued the warning as they have recorded 21 cases of leptospirosis with seven deaths for the first six months of this year.

She said they must use personal protective equipment like boots if they cannot avoid from wading on flood waters.

The health officer said the number of cases for this year’s first semester are quite alarming since it is triple than the seven cases they have recorded for the entire 2017.

Miravite said five of the seven mortalities recorded since January this year were males and the remaining two were females, adding that the ages of this year’s leptospirosis patients ranged from 19 to 60 years old.

She also advised the public to seek early medication once they manifest signs and symptoms of leptospirosis.

The signs and symptoms included fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, cough, and rashes. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
