Stalag 69 rules Brgy. Carmen Fiesta chess team tourney

ALWAYS relying on youthful reinforcement, Stalag 69 kept its winning streak, this time dominating the recently-concluded Barangay Carmen Fiesta “Tatluhan” chess team tournament here.

Skippered by newly-crowned Asean age-group 16-under boys champion Ronald Canino, Stalag 69 posted 12 match points to pocket the P10,000 top purse plus trophy.

Playing on board two and three for Stalag are the pair of veteran players Rodney Opada and Oliver Damonsong.

“I always believe in youth talent the reason why batan-on gyod permi among top-board (teenagers are always the top-board). Buwenas sab nga pamaagi kay dili man gyod mawala sa karera among team (It's somehow a luch because our team are always on the rank.),” said Damonsong, the undisputed playing-team manager of the multi-titled Stalag 69.

At solo second place with a total of 11 match points is the CDO Builders spearheaded by former National Shell Active junior champion Bryan Jose with veteran campaigners Paciano Gulle and Edward Tare manning boards 2 and 3, respectively.

Jose and company went home P7,000 richer.

Team Balquimer, composed of Johnnel Balquin, Jun Mabaylan and Domingo Oga, finished in a tie with six others at 10 points each, but enjoyed superior tiebreak points to secure the third-place honor worth P4,000 also with trophy.

Rounding up the top-10 finishers are the Best Defense, Ubanan Warriors, Barroso, MAREX, Davao Eagles, Iligan Knights and Overcomer.

“We’re very thankful nga ang pamilyang Uy uban ni Klarex nga atong Congressman dili gyod nila gakalimtan ang mga chess players adunay gyoy torneyo sa chess mahitabo kada tuig sa barangay Carmen,” said tournament director Jong Arroyo.
