OFFICIALS and employees of the municipal government of Arayat went green over the weekend and joined hands in planting some 2,000 tree saplings at Mount Arayat as part of the annual reforestation program.

Mayor Emmanuel “Bon” Alejandrino was joined by town councilmen, barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials, department heads and other employees in planting seedlings of narra, mahogany and fruit-bearing trees on Saturday morning, July 14.

Alejandrino said the seedlings were planted in part of the mountain located in Barangay San Juan Baño, which has been identified as landslide prone.

The group focused on top of the area where a landslide took dozens of lives in 2009, Alejandrino said.

“Our tree planting activity is part of our reforestation program every year in our bid to bring back the good glory of our beloved Mt. Arayat. We have also been faithful in conducting this activity to prevent erosions and landslides from happening,” he said.

Alejandrino recalled when he launched the annual tree planting activity in 2014 as part of his commitment to avert unfortunate incidents claiming the lives of his constituents, while also reviving the denuded forest of Mount Arayat which once served as his “shelter.”

Since then, Alejandrino said hundreds of thousands of trees were already planted by Arayateños and other environmentalists and concerned citizens, some of the trees now serving their purpose of not only beautifying Mount Arayat, but also preventing landslides and erosion from happening.

On Saturday, July 21, Alejandrino said 2,000 more seedlings are set to be planted by local government officials and employees in other areas in Barangay San Juan Baño, particularly barren areas.

“In at least five years, we can already see this plants growing fully. I will not be the mayor of Arayat by then, but I will still be the one that planted some of the trees here which, I’m sure, are already doing their part in preventing erosion and flooding in my hometown,” Alejandrino said.
