Legaspi: Symptoms of political fever

DENGUE would have symptoms that the doctors could spot so he can give the suspected diagnosis. When the symptoms are very clear that is the time that the doctor declares it as a finding.

Most often, the antidote is given late and no more cure is possible. This is the world of medicine and medicine are there to be and supposedly a cure for an ailment or illness.

In the Philippines today, many symptoms are surfacing, where we could say that the Philippine society is sick. Most of these symptoms are not simply symptoms but are contagious diseases already. The manifestation of these symptoms and illnesses are realities of a deeper sickness.

The first symptom one finds today is that people are clamoring for the high cost of living. Basic commodities in the Philippines have high skyrocketing prices. It seems that the promise brought by the Train Law is now having its reverse effects. The inflation rate has gone up to a level that is incomprehensible and unbelievable. The economy of the country today is uncontrollable.

No one can control the adverse effect of the Train Law. Yes, in the first three months of the Train implementation, many were relieved to see a lower withholding tax and a bigger take-home pay.

But as the Train progresses, one could now feel that what savings they had in the past would now cover the fast speed growth of prices of basic commodities. To worsen the situation, political warlords are now hoarding the circulation of money for their next bid. The Train law is slowly eating up the life of the ordinary Filipino.

Another clear symptom of this sick society is that many roads are destroyed everywhere and nobody is brave enough to shout at those responsible for destroying good roads and leaving behind the bad roads.

This is clearly telling us that the “political worms” are now starting to amass money from their kickbacks from these projects. I hope our dear friends understand that the money they are receiving every election is supposed to be money used to deliver basic services and these are their own money returned to them.

So, the newly inaugurated roads are symptoms of the recurring illness of our country. We must look for a real cure for this.

The third symptom is the apathy of the young people and most of the people. We no longer criticize or analyze the events in this country. We only wait for a bigger push or a situation of “no return” before we once again act.

The young people are more concerned with their digital gadgets and not of the things and events that are unfolding before their very eyes. Priests and human beings are killed but we have not heard a strong indignation of really looking for those who did the job. This symptom could be cured through active and critical analysis of the signs of the times.

So, shall we allow our society to suffer from political illness or fever?

It is not the politicians who suffer but it all boils down to all of us, Filipinos. We are all laughed at and we are all falling into the pit of our sick and rotten society run by people with good and evil motives.

A doctor a day will keep the apple away. Good day.
