MULTI-AWARDED artist Elenita Cruz Dumlao opened her 10th solo exhibition at Art Portal, Gallery for Contemporary Art last Friday, July 13, 2018.

Entitled “Contemporary Mood,” the exhibit features a total of 31 paintings showing the Dabawenyo artist’s interpretation of what she sees and of the experiences she encounters each day.

An award-winning artist proud to have been trained and nurtured by artistic parents, Dumlao shared that every piece she creates reflects her feelings and thoughts of the things around us.

“Each of my work is an expression of how I feel and think about my world. Each contains a part of my mind, heart, and soul,” she said.

In an interview following the official opening ceremony of the 12-day art exhibit, Dumlao revealed that she also draws inspiration from the light.

Dumlao, a home-grown artist who has been developing and practicing this craft for at least five decades, is not only into painting, as she is likewise showing exceptional talents in dancing, music, and theatre arts. In fact, she is currently the artistic director of a multi-awarded cultural company based in Davao City.

As a proof that she has excelled in her field, Dumlao has been a recipient of an award for her exemplary contributions to arts from the office of city mayor and vice mayor. It is worth noting as well that she was the only Asian artist who made it to the 10th International Women’s Exhibit in Majdanpek, Serbia in 2013. She even brought home then the top prize for the New Media Art category.

In her past nine one-woman art shows, five were conducted at the Museo Dabawenyo. Meanwhile, the latest, which ran from May 10 to June 15, was held in General Santos.

Apart from her solo exhibitions, she had participated, too, in several local, national, and international group shows featuring different artists.

To those who are into this form of art, Dumlao has this to say, “For the upcoming artists, struggling artists, you just have to be original and to be brave. Just move forward.”

Catch her ongoing exhibit at Art Portal, Gallery for Contemporary Art at Door 1-A Paseo de Legaspi Bldg., 115 P.Pelayo St, Davao City. Be one of the owners of Dumlao’s art pieces by dropping by until July 24.
