Flood control program is a must

EACH of Cagayan de Oro’s 80 barangays should allocate an amount intended for their flood control program, a city official said.

City Administrator Teddy Sabuga-a said they are intensifying the city's flood mitigation program by involving villages in the campaign.

Sabuga-a said in a meeting with village officials, it was agreed that there should be declogging in canals and drainages at least every week.

“While we are still working on our drainages, the storms and rains, and flooding will continue so we have to be ready. Declogging our canals can actually help. So we asked them that they should allocate a budget just for this particular budget,” he said.

“We have to accept that this is now our way of life, climate change is upon us, and whether we like it or not, Cagayan de Oro is catchment of water that comes from the mountains. So instead of blaming each other, we must put our words into action,” he added.

The City Council is also set to discuss the flooding problem in an aim to come up with a master drainage plan to guide new applications of subdivisions, town houses, relocation sites, that they will not disrupt the natural flow of water when building their drainage.
