SPC Sharks draw first blood

SOUTHERN de Oro Philippines College (SPC) Sharks scored an opening win after thrashing Iligan Medical Center College, 99-69, in the 2018 Cagayan de Oro Basketball Federation (CDOBF) HNH President’s Cup collegiate men’s division on Sunday at Liceo de Cagayan de University (LDCU) GYM.

Twin Towers Rudjud Daga and Chan Pagaran gave 14 points each for SPC, while Harvey Alvarez chipped in 11 markers. Earl John Ibot and Earl Tanawon combined for 18.

The Sharks, last year’s runner-up after losing to Xavier University (XU) Crusaders by a narrow margin in the final, dictated the whole match and kept a double digit lead in the closing of every quarter.

Despite in command, the boys of coach Rey Dangcal continued the rampage as they stretched their highest lead of the game with 31 points in the final fourth quarter.

“I told my boys to keep aggressive in the offensives and wait until they will give up their defense. And it did,” said Dangcal over their victory.

In the league opener, St. Mary’s School (SMS) Feats of coach Rene Ilogon pulled a 122-62 lopsided win against La Salle Academy in the 16-under boys division.

St. Mary’s started hot with a 35-16 lead at the end of the first quarter and was in total command of the game when they stretched a 76-28 lead at half time.

“A good way to the start the league. Hopefully it’s a good start,” said Ilogon.

Cagayan de Oro National High School (CDONHS) Tigers, on the other hand, routed IMCC, 102-76, in the 18-under boys.

The Tigers were slow in the first half, but finally broke the ice after surging a 33-18 run in the third quarter.

They continued to step on the gas with a 34-21 edge in the final fourth quarter to nail an opening win.

La Salle Academy of Iligan City prevailed over Millenium Christian Academy via 92-89 victory in the 18-under boys. (JJF)
