History was on the side of Talisay City Aquastars as they completed a perfect season after pulling off a pulsating 66-64 win over San Francisco in Game 2 of the best-of-three championship in the Cebu Governor’s Cup Inter Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament.

The Aquastars finished off San Francisco last Wednesday night at the jam-packed San Francisco Gym in Camotes Island, and completed an impressive 14-0 win-loss record in the province-wide 21-Under basketball tournament organized by Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC).

“I give the credit to all my players because all season long they have shown willingness to win. From the start they have been dedicated and committed to the team,” Talisay City’s head coach Rey Guerra told SunStar Cebu.

Talisay City bagged the P500,000 cash purse for the second season champion, while the runner-up and North Division champion San Francisco did not go empty handed as got P300,000.

Talisay City shrugged off the crowd in Game 2 to win a closely-contested match as they scored buckets down the stretch while limiting San Francisco’s star Kenny Rogers Rocacurva in the final minutes of play.

Down by two points after the second quarter, San Francisco was able to tie the game at 45-all going the final quarter. The host team, though, came short in the final period.

“We preach team work and motivate them to trust their teammates. It was the key for us in reaching this championship. We did not think about this we just played one game at a time and thankfully we were able to finish the tournament with a 14-0 record,” said Guerra.

Elmer Echavez led Talisay City with his 21 points from 9-of-16 shooting from the field, on top of four rebounds and three assists. Rodel Beduya added 12 points, three rebounds, two steals and one block.

Rocacurva again led San Francisco with 18 points and 10 rebounds but he struggled on the field with 5-of-17 shooting in the field. Jake Laurence Gonzales and Wilson Pleños Jr. had 15 and 13 points, respectively.

CPSC executive director Ramil Abing congratulated both squads for giving their hearts out in the championship game. “Job well done for Talisay City and to San Francisco they have proved that talents does not lie on the mainland only. I am looking for a bigger Governor’s Cup next year,” said Abing. (RSC)
