Village councilor injured in shooting

A NEWLY-elected barangay official was injured after he was shot by two unidentified men on a motorcycle in front of Victorias North Elementary School at Barangay 5 in Victorias City, Negros Occidental Friday morning.

Wounded was Kagawad Jebert Flores, 30, of Barangay 14. He is also a farm supervisor in a hacienda.

Chief Inspector Eduardo Corpuz, city police chief, said the victim was waiting for his daughter for lunch around 11:20 a.m. when one of the two suspects fired at him, hitting his left shoulder. The gunman then fled with the driver, who also served as a lookout.

The victim, who sustained a minor injury was rushed to a private hospital in Bacolod City.

Police recovered from the scene a deformed slug of a homemade shotgun.

Corpuz said the victim started to receive threats when he told the five tenants of the hacienda to vacate the land as advise by his boss.

"It has nothing to do with politics. It is something personal because of his work at the hacienda," Corpuz said.

Corpuz said they already have persons of interest but they will wait for the victim's statement to confirm the identity of the gunman, whose name was withheld for the meantime.

He also said the gunman's companion may also be included in the filing of the case because of his participation.
