Itogon mayor opposes sanitary landfill

ITOGON Mayor Victorio Palangdan is opposed to Baguio City Engineered Sanitary Landfill in Antamok.

“We are just waiting for them if they would continue to implement, we would oppose the Engineered Sanitary Landfill in Antamok,” Palangdan said.

The mayor added he has conveyed their stand to the Baguio General Services Office who visited the municipality last week.

Palangdan said he has yet to meet Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan on the proposed sanitary landfill.

The mayor added he is optimistic the dialogue will take place during the upcoming Baguio-La Trinidad- Itogon-Sablan-Tuba-Tublay meeting.

The Engineered Sanitary Landfill is eyed as permanent solution to the current garbage woes of the summer capital.

In an agreement, Benguet Corporation will allow the free use of its 24.1 hectare titled property in Antamok which used to be the mining firm’s open pit mine in the community.

The city has been hauling waste in a temporary transfer facility along Marcos Highway in Tuba, Benguet before they are brought down to the Urdaneta Sanitary Landfill in Pangasinan.

Palangdan, meanwhile, urged the mining firm to instead return the 24.1 hectares to the National Government to be utilized as a 'Minahang Bayan'.

The mayor added the area to be utilized as sanitary landfill is the property of the National Government and the patented mining claim in the area do not lapse.

Palangdan added the mining firm should apply for conversion, however, they will protest if they will convert the area into other ventures.

“It is the property of our National Government because from the start, they got the title of that land because of their mining operation. It should now be reverted back to the state to become a public land,” he added.
