Editorial: Listen, discern

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte will be delivering his third State of the Nation Address (SONA), we hope that people will listen and know what is really happening, and what has happened.

It does not help that we expect rallyists again to drown out what is being said. But then, that has already been the norm, so let us just sit down and listen on our own. Count us fortunate that in this digital times, we can get it straight live.

There will be no need for television stations to deliver the contents to us completely with their invited guests bringing their own agenda into the fray, instead of listening and working from what has been said.

We cannot help but recall that news about the 2017 Perils of Perception survey by Ipsos that ranked online Filipinos as the number 3 least accurate when it comes to the misperception index, believing that their world is worse than it actually is when it comes to murder rates, terrorist deaths, teenage pregnancy, diabetes, and how healthy people felt.

The survey was conducted in 38 countries with 29,133 interviewed from September 28 to October 19, 2017.

The countries surveyed were Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South frica, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Great Britain and the USA, with Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, and Serbia.

"Despite being among the least accurate, respondents in India, the Philippines and Peru are among the most confident in their answers," the survey results read.

"In contrast, Norway, Germany, and Sweden come out among the most accurate in the index, but are among the least confident in their answers," the survey concluded. In the Philippines, it's easy to see the reason why the online Filipino views are distorted: it's because there are organized groups deliberately distorting the stories.

Add that to the cultural penchant to speak without listening, then what we have is a confident misinformed population. Let's take a break and listen. And since many are already connected, look it up, Google. Let us use our connectivity intelligently, let us not use this to destroy our country. We only have one.
