YLAD clinches slo-pitch tourney

YLAD Cubzats made big adjust ments in the pitching department allowing only four homers for Cresencia Village Barangay Batters to win the Baguio Slo-Pitch Tournament championship crown at the

Wangal Sports Complex.

The Cubzats adjustment paid off big as posted a 9-4 win against the Batters, who won the La Trinidad Slo-Pitch Tournament Cobcobo Cup in 2009.

The Batters where only limited to four points in seven innings, a far cry from their high scoring game in their previous outing where they had a chance to beat Cubzats during the elimination phase of the tournament.

Cubzats pitcher Jano Cardenas allowed at least seven walks in the entire seven innings, as compared to his performance during the semifinal match against Betag where he pitched badly that it almost cost them their twice to beat advantage.

"The boys played big today. They were able to make big hits in the second, third and fourth innings and that's where they took off," said Cubzats coach Alex Dalog.

After trailing by two at the end of the first inning, Cubzats scored nine straight points with the second up the third inning with two homers in the second, three in the third and four on the fourth.

Scoring for the Cubzats were Jimmy Muñoz, Billy Dawaton, Cardenas, Alvin Madugay and Prado Digmayo.

Virgilio la Peña had two base hit runs while Ruel and Ryan la Peña scored one home run each.

The Batters failed to answer in the three inning-run by Cubzats and added to their woes with three successive fly-outs in the bottom of the fifth.

Cubzats also failed to score a run in the top of the fifth inning but later on allowed two runs in the top of the sixth inning while the Cubzats failed to earn another run on top of the sixth with two fly-outs and one ground out.

"They were the only team to beat us in the eliminations but we were able to close them out in the championship game," added Dalog.

Both teams later on failed to score a base hit in the seventh inning. In the battle for third, Betag edged the Razors in their match.

Dalog, who is also the president of the Baguio-Benguet Batted Balls Association said they are also working out a tournament in April as part of the Lang-ay Festival and another Benguet Slo-Pitch tournament later this year.
