THE National Dairy Authority (NDA) in the Visayas is receiving 13 heads of pregnant dairy heifers worth about P1 million from the province, through the Negros First Ranch (NFR) in Barangay Sta. Rosa, Murcia.

Joselito Jaballa, officer-in-charge of Livestock Service Division of the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO), told SunStar Bacolod that the NFR has served as dairy multiplier farm of the NDA.

Jaballa said the agency has been supplying dairy stocks to the province being used in the latter's milk production initiatives.

"We were to avail of the NDA's services like provision of imported dairy animals so by way of payment we are giving them these stocks produced at the NFR," he added.

The 13 heads of pregnant heifers for dairy production are up for transport, within this month, to NDA-Visayas based in Cebu.

It will be distributed to Antique, Jaballa said, adding that this only shows that Negros Occidental is capable of producing quality stocks being spread among other provinces.

"It's also a validation that the province was able to sustain its status as one of the leaders or major contributors of the country's livestock industry," he stressed.

Earlier, PVO announced that it is also distributing this month 33 heads of high-quality breeds of bulls and heifers worth P1.1 million.

Twenty heads of Holstein Friesian cattle with crosses of sahiwal will be dispersed all over the six districts in the province.

The other 13 heads of cattle are up for distribution to the province’s satellite breeding centers. Of which, three are bulls and 10 are heifers.

These stocks are high-quality breeds produced at the NFR through the Provincial Animal Genetic Improvement Program (Pagip).

Pagip is one of the flagship programs of the Provincial Government, through the PVO, aimed at improving and upgrading the genetic makeup of local livestock and poultry animals.

It is complemented by the Negros First Animal Livelihood Program which targets to augment the livelihood of raisers in the province.
