Editorial: President’s address

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte will deliver today his third State of the Nation Address (SONA).

But knowing the president, expect there will be non-stop cursing, mumbling speeches and ad-libs.

A prepared speech for 35 minutes, the time limit of the address, will certainly bore Duterte, who is known for improvising to make the audience laugh.

In addressing the nation, the country’s top chief executive is supposed to present the country’s situation, the accomplishment in the previous year, and its policy directions. But Duterte?

Again, it is his penchant for delivering impromptu speeches. (By the way, if the speechwriter could have prepared a bullet-type of speeches, it would be helpful).

More than two years into office, the Duterte administration has put emphasis on its bloody war on drugs and corruption.

However, the killings have been the new normal in the country these days.

The public execution of priests and local chief executives has marred its two years in office, as well as the killing of journalists.

The surge in the prices of fuel and basic commodities, brought by the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (Train) Law, continue to burden the citizen, as well as the sinking deep of the Philippine peso.

The administration has barely scratched the surface. Four more years.

Is there really a change? Or that remains to be just a trance?
