Fire hits Zamboanga City coastal village

THE City Government has mobilized its resources to provide relief assistance to more than 1,000 victims of the fire that hit a west coast village of Zamboanga City.

Senior Superintendent Jhufel Brañanola, Zamboanga City Fire District marshal, said the fire broke out at 1:05 p.m. of July 22. It razed 400 houses at Purok 5 in the village of Labuan.

Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar personally supervised on Sunday, July 22, the distribution of food packs and relief goods to the fire victims.

City Social Welfare and Development Office head Socorro Rojas, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office personnel led by Dr. Elmeir Jade Apolinario, barangay officials led by Ronald Maravilla and other agencies joined the mayor in distribution of the relief assistance.

Apolinario said the food packs they distributed were good for two days. The funds used in the purchase of the food packs came from the CDRRMO.

Salazar said Monday, July 23, that a total of 382 families with 1,265 dependents were profiled and provided with food assistance, "but the profiling procedures continue at the temporary shelter."

Maravilla said the fire victims were temporarily housed at the Labuan Elementary School and some have sought refuge with their relatives.

Brañanola said the fire, which reached fourth alarm, started at the residence of Marko Tarhata and rapidly spread and razed 400 houses mostly made of light materials.

Authorities said the fire has damaged an estimated P4-million worth of properties. (SunStar Philippines)
