Cocpo checking into 'abduction' reports

A CAGAYAN de Oro City police official said Monday, July 23, that authorities are validating and probing the attempted abduction cases of alleged Maranao victims that made rounds in social media over the weekend.

Superintendent Mardy Hortillosa II, spokesperson of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo), said there were two attempted abduction incidents recorded in Police Station 1 (Divisoria) and Police Station 2 (Cogon) this month, but investigators are verifying the said reports.

"Naay record kay nagpa blotter man ang mga alleged victims pero gi-validate pa ug giimbestigahan kay medyo kulang ang detalye (We have records since the alleged victims filed a blotter, but we are still validating and investigating the cases since the details are insufficient)," Hortillosa said.

The Cocpo leadership also denied the arrest and detention of suspects allegedly responsible for abduction cases. Photos of which were also circulated online.

"Be informed that the Cocpo had not arrested any suspect for abduction as of this moment. Cocpo asks the public to calm down and stay focus in their daily activity since the office is still investigating and validating the said reports," the Cocpo said in a statement.

Hortillosa said investigators are coordinating with the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) in Northern MIndanao, Muslim leaders, Ulama, Muslim Youth leaders and Task Force Oro to validate the reports.

"While we are doing this, Cocpo asks the public not to panic but impose security measures individually since we can't discount the possibility that we can be a victim of crime if we are relax. Rest assured that our police office is doing everything that we can to protect you in coordination with our counterparts, but we can't do it without the public support," the Cocpo added.

Hortillosa said victims of the alleged abduction attempts are urged to cooperate with the police in the conduct of the investigation.

"Kay kung tinuod gyud ni nga mga nahitabo, angayan lang nga lakgon ang mga suspects (If these incidents were true then it is but proper to pursue the suspects)," he said.
