Classes in Masantol suspended until July 27

THE local government of Masantol has announced the suspension of classes from Monday, July 23, up to Friday, July 27, as floodwaters in the whole town continue to rise and expected to linger in the coming days.

Mayor Danilo Guintu made the announcement through Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) Advisory 4, citing the expected continuous rainfall brought about by forthcoming tropical depressions and the existing flooding in municipal and barangay roads going to schools.

As a catch basin of Central Luzon's, Guintu said the descent of waters from the upstream will further aggravate the flooding situation in the town, especially in the coastal villages in the left bank portion of Pampanga River in Masantol.

"All our 26 barangays remain flooded, including most of our roads which the students should pass through going to their schools and the schools themselves. We will ask the Department of Education to update the school calendar because we cannot risk the safety of our children," he said.

Meanwhile, Guintu reminded all residents to monitor their situation and remain alert for possible pre-emptive evacuation should floodwaters rise to alert level and pose massive danger to families.

Based on the latest data of this town's MDRRMC, at least 6,000 families or more than 30,000 individuals are already affected by the standing flood due to rains brought about by tropical cyclones "Henry," "Inday," and "Josie" heightened by the southwest monsoon and high level tide.

Guintu said the whole municipality also remains under state of calamity to ensure that the local government can provide all possible assistance needed by residents.

Earlier this week, the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office distributed relief packs to 2,000 residents in the metro plaza area, while the Provincial Government provided aid to more than 5,000 households in this town's coastal villages.

"The MDDRMC and members of the multi-agency group will remain in full alert to closely monitor and assess the situation in the whole town in the coming days. The local government is prepositioned to provide all possible assistance to flood victims in the town to ensure their safety and security throughout this calamity season," he said.
