IT IS really nice to watch a basketball game when there is an experienced, professional basketball barker at the official table. We're talking about the Finals of Animolympics 2010 (USLS Sportfest) last Friday, January 22 wherein the CBA won against the defending champion College of Nursing.

The barker really excites the game with good introduction and it seems you are just watching live the PBA, UAAP or NCAA. We're talking about Jorvi Wong Villanueva, a product of La Salle Bacolod.

He started as a barker during his college days at La Salle too. From the intramurals he made his mark and later was asked to do UNIGAMES basketball games at USLS Coliseum.

With a rare talent like his, it was easy for him to be discovered by the Philippine Basketball Association. He was asked if he can be with them in Manila. He was a student at that time and courteously declined the offer as he has to finish college.

Later he went to Manila and tried his luck at the PBA. He was taken in and was charged to cover PBA On Tour games held at the provinces. For someone who considers barking a hobby, landing in the PBA is a bonus.

He was even asked by Mr. Bernie Atienza from DLSU- College of St. Benilde to be in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. He was acquired by the NCAA and covered the whole Season 82.

Currently this guy is under the Liga Pilipinas. Jorvi was just watching the first game at Cebu Coliseum and at that time there was no barker. It so happened that there were people working the league's statistics who knew him as a barker.

Next thing he knew, he was asked if he can do the second game. He was introduced by his good friend Coach Nomar Isla to the technical head of Liga Pilipinas. It turned out that the chief was Perry Martinez who was his former boss at the PBA.

It was great as the Liga Pilipinas Conference 4 kicks off tentatively on February 3 at the New Cebu City Coliseum. Now the Liga followers can hear and see this guy in different venues. Negrenses, however, have to cross the strait to see Iloilo's Mang Inasal Warriors as Bacolod has no team.

It is said that we should never underestimate people through looks. Who knows that such person may, has or will achieve more than you do. Physical difficulties are never a hindrance to this guy. He excelled more than people who are better equipped physically.

Ones disability is not a reason to feel sorry. God always compensate your handicap as nobody among us is perfect. One way or the other, the other fellow is better than you are.

And Jorvi, the Barker, believes, that "we are all capable of making ourselves happy. But happiness is somewhat different when someone else does it for us."
