Mental health in the workplace

EMPLOYEES at work think, feel, and behave differently. Their environment can impact everything from their productivity and communication to their ability to be productive. The promotion of good mental health is very important to improve relationships and outputs in an organization.

Studies even have shown that when an employee is unhappy with or unfulfilled by work can cause damage to one’s health, relationships, and even lifespan. Employees in an unhealthy work environment tend to be hospitalized often and have higher incidences of mass resignations. The work stress also plays a big impact in the family life, and working productivity of an individual. There are even reports of increasing chronic illnesses like heart diseases.

The issues due to poor metal health at work continue to cause increasing absenteeism and poor performance on employees. In fact, it causes problems in the organization more than money but it leads to chaos in the employee’s relationship. And since employee’s life is about 1/3 of their everyday existence, it is important that an organization should give attention to issues that endanger mental health at work.

Let me share to you how organizations can promote mental health at work.

Discourage gossiping. To create a healthy environment, it should begin with the people around the organization. Gossiping is a habit of people who have lost their focus on being productive with their expected outputs. They are those busy trying to pull down people who are trying their best to reach their goals. They are the weak and they try to mask their inadequacies most of the time by critiquing others so that the world would perceive them as inadequate. If these people would just wake up and realize that gossiping is like an endemic illness that kills, then maybe they would start saving themselves first.

Humbly listen to each other’s voices. An organization will not prosper peacefully if all will not allow each other to present their views. Usually, those people who are known to be the speaker of the houses are only those respected and believed to be with brilliant ideas. When somebody not very popular begins to speak up, he or she will be tag as “walang karapatan.” Nobody takes time to listen to the emerging voices that would somehow change the world of an organization. Employees should feel that it is alright to express how they feel but without vigilance.

Support employees in identifying risks of mental stress. It is so sad that when an employee expresses their work-related stress, they are left unheard because it was all described as less important concerns. An employee might not be able to complete his or her task because of an overload of responsibilities. Whereas others were so free just giving vague instruction and evaluating without his or her share of work. People in the organization should be given time to also evaluate their environment and people around them for the betterment of all.

While mental health at work promotion would differ for each employee. The major solution to create a healthy work environment remains the same over the years. Happy employees are those with supportive co-employees, those with managers that transform them to become managers in the future and those organizations that offer professional growth!
