‘Use social media accounts for developmental purposes’

BACOLOD City Mayor Evelio Leonardia appealed to all the social media users to use their accounts for developmental purposes.

This, after unidentified individuals were using the name of Leonardia, along with Congressman Greg Gasataya, Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran and Councilor Caesar Distrito on Facebook.

Leonardia said Tuesday, July 24, he was only informed on Sunday, July 22, that he has fake accounts on Facebook.

“I was surprised because they are making me appear funny or ridiculous. I am sure the purpose of these is to discredit me or even destroy me,” he said.

He added, “if I am their target politically, it should be only me. They should not make any issue that could affect the public.”

The mayor noted that the fake Facebook accounts are misleading the public.

“I am appealing to everybody to use the social media for more developmental purposes,” Leonardia said.

Gasataya had earlier advised the public to be more vigilant and cautious against the fake accounts on Facebook using the name of the public officials.

Gasataya said it is unfair and it will create more problems for the people of Bacolod.

Distrito also said he will file charges against those who are behind the fake account in Facebook.

He said there is a cyber law that prohibits the dissemination of false or libelous statements through social media.

“Making an online account, claiming to be someone else is identity theft,” Distrito added.

Distrito disclosed that those behind the fake Facebook accounts want to destroy the city’s top officials by posting false information.
